Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third, or fourth toes and generally refers to any bending of the toe beyond its natural position. It is most commonly caused by wearing poor fitting shoes. As a result, women who wear high heel shoes or tight, narrow shoes are more vulnerable to developing a hammertoe. However, individuals who have experienced trauma or nerve damage caused by diabetes or stroke are also susceptible.

Hammertoes usually start out as mild deformities. However, if left untreated, they can worsen. Individuals suffering from hammertoe often experience pain and limited mobility of the toe joint.
