A bursa is a thin fluid-filled sac that serves to reduce friction between tendon and bone. Bursitis is when the bursa has become inflamed such that it becomes irritated when moved. It has many causes including trauma and infection. However, most commonly bursitis happens as a result of repetitive movement and excessive pressure.

The symptoms of bursitis vary from pain and stiffness of the joint, to a burning sensation. The pain experienced is usually worse before and after physical activity, and can cause joint stiffness the following day.
