A bunion is a bony growth that can be found at the joint where the big toe meets the foot. This growth forms as a result of the big toe pushing up against the second toe. The pressure that results causes the bone or tissue around the joint of the big toe to protrude and increase in size. Because the joint moves with physical activity, as it worsens, the bunion causes many individuals to suffer from discomfort and pain. Over time, bursitis or arthritis may set in and everyday walking may become difficult.

Bunions are most commonly caused by wearing tight shoes. Although they are not hereditary, bunions can also result due to faulty foot structure or a medical condition, such as arthritis.
