Located at the back of the ankle joint, the Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body. Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of this tendon. Over time, if not resolved, Achilles tendonitis can progress into a degeneration of the tendon developing into a condition called Achilles tendonosis. If this happens the tendon loses its organized structure and is more prone to developing microscopic tears.

Although Achilles tendonitis is most often caused by overuse, lack of proper stretching can cause the Achilles tendon to remain tight during exercise and lead to the development of tendonitis.
